Steps for

Painted with Photoshop CS4, Cintiq 12WX.

This one started as a doodle in my Earthbound. I scanned it, turned it to grayscale and painted grayscale on top. Going from grayscale to color, I used a mix of Color and Overlay layer modes and Normal paints on top. Then I added detail, detail, detail. ;)

I hope you like it! :la:

If I may ask, what size do you work with, for this huge level of detail?

Usually 8.5" x 11" at 300 dpi which is about 3300x2550 pixels :)
This is a good size for me because my computer can handle it easily and a great amount of detail can be added to faces/portraits!

But doesn't this mean that you use only very few layers?

I use a LOT of layers!!! My file size often ends up being rather huge because of it, but my computer can handle it ;)

Hi there I have a question ^^;
When you shade the skin tone what color do you use exactly? Is it supposed to be like a reddish brown? Or do you use the burn tool?
Thank you ^^

That's a pretty complex question!
When I started working on this, it was in grays. I use Color and Overlay modes over the grays to shade the skin. The goal was for the skin to be a light pink, the shadows to be a darker version of that color. I use the paint brush to apply color, not the Burn tool. However, the Burn tool is useful for making bold shadow colors, by the way, just on low pressure or it can be too harsh.

I've never approached that level of detail. Your work is really amazing. I yearn for a cintiq so strongly it is not even funny. You should be very proud of all aspects of this piece. The skin tone, the proportions, the drop shadows, the depth of field. the lace work, the specular highlights, and of course, the hair are all top notch. One question I had I like to ask other artists that complete long projects like this is what kind of music did you listen to while you were doing it. Also, was this done at home or at a studio?... or combination of the two.

Hey, great job!

Thank you so much for the kind words here! ;)

No worries, the same level of detail can be achevied with a regular inexpensive tablet, the Cintiq just makes it that much more enjoyable, so I would highly recommend saving up for one to get eventually! :)

Really I only worked around about 20 hours on this, so its not really any bigger of a project than my normal work. I work freelance from my home office, not at a studio or anything like that. Music- Oh, how I love to listen to music while I work! A variety of music was listened to in the making of this piece, and particular songs that flowed well with the mood I was going for were played over and over...and over..and over...Glen Hansard's "You Will Become" was one of the most played while working on this piece, love that song! :la:

Yeah, thanks for the reply.

I have a tablet but it is just an older Wacom from a few years back. I am going to eventually invest in the cintiq...

I hang around CGhub and Gamasutra to pick up freelance gigs. Where do you get jobs from?

Never listened to Glen Hansard but I will check it out...

Thanks for the reply and again..

Hey, great job!

For the lace, I made a custom brush from a hand-drawn segment and brushed it on. Then I made it appear folded and flowing with the Liquify filter. After that, I just went back and make additional adjustments or details by hand. I hope its helpful! :la:

Thanks so much!

Thank you very much for your reply. Very interesting, will be good to experiment. Could I just ask one more question please? What settings do you use on Liquid Lens filter? I can never get any convenient balance in all the option. It'll be really helpful!

No problem! ;)

I like to use the Forward Warp tool in a large brush size and a Density set about halfway or so on the slider so that its more fluid. I usually keep the pressure all the way up for most adjustments. You may need to adjust them all though, if you would like more or less of the image distorted with each stroke. The good thing about the filter is that its easy to undo and try again if you aren't happy with the results! =D
